Vanier Institute CEO Nora Spinks Appointed to National Seniors Council

Seniors account for a growing share of Canadians and they make diverse and unique contributions to families, communities and society at large. As Canada’s population ages and life expectancy continues to rise, seniors will continue to play a large – and quite possibly growing – role in family and community life, in which many are mentors, nurturers, caregivers, child care providers, spiritual guides, historians and more.

On August 7, 2018, the Honourable Filomena Tassi, Minister of Seniors, and the Honourable Ginette Petitpas Taylor, Minister of Health, appointed Vanier Institute CEO Nora Spinks to the National Seniors Council (NSC), an advisory group to the Government of Canada on matters related to the health, well-being and quality of life of seniors.

Through activities such as research, expert panels and roundtables, and consultative meetings, the NSC supports evidence-based decision making that incorporates input from diverse stakeholders, including (but not limited to) seniors, expert organizations and groups that provide seniors’ programs and services, and relevant provincial/territorial advisory bodies on seniors.

“It is an honour to be appointed to the National Seniors Council,” says Vanier Institute CEO Nora Spinks. “As the number and proportion of seniors in Canada grows in the coming decades, we will see some challenges, but also new opportunities for intergenerational relationships that can support the well-being of all Canadians. I look forward to working with my council colleagues, as well as Minister Tassi and Minister Petitpas Taylor, as we facilitate research and knowledge mobilization on this increasingly important topic.”
