Grandparents often play a key role in the daily lives of their grandchildren, including when playing outdoors. Outdoor play has long been recognized as providing physical, psychological, and developmental health benefits for children. Research has examined the experiences and outcomes of parenting and outdoor play, but not of those for older family members. This study examines the experiences and perspectives of Canadian grandparents on outdoor play with their grandchildren.

This research builds on our growing understanding of the Family Structure component of the Vanier Institute’s Family Diversities and Wellbeing Framework.
