Research Snapshot: Family Victimization of Sexual and Gender Minority Youth in Canada
Highlights from a study about LGBTQ2S+ youth victimized by family
April 26, 2023
In recent decades, there has been progress in Canada toward accepting sexual and gender minorities (SGMs). However, many people in this community do not find this acceptance in their families. Parents with a child who is a sexual or gender minority often struggle with, or have negative attitudes toward, their child’s identity. Many SGM adults experienced verbal and physical abuse from their families as youth.
This study explores the extent to which sexual and gender minority youth and emerging adults in Canada are victimized by family members. Researchers examine what supported participants’ resiliency and wellbeing.
This research builds on our growing understanding of the Family Identity component of the Vanier Institute’s Family Diversities and Wellbeing Framework.
