The benefits of regular physical activity are well documented, but children and adults often do not get the recommended daily amount. Parents are key in supporting their children’s physical activity participation. This support could include buying sports equipment, driving children to events, providing encouragement, or participating themselves. Previous studies show that many parents have positive attitudes about the benefits and importance of physical activity. Despite this, families still report barriers to including physical activities in their lives.

This study examines the exit interviews from a family physical activity planning study in order to explore barriers to and benefits of family physical activity for parents and their school-aged children.

This research builds on our growing understanding of the Family Wellbeing component of the Vanier Institute’s Family Diversities and Wellbeing Framework.
