Russ joined the Vanier Institute in 2016. Russ has extensive first-hand experience with the family impacts of work-related mobility, having served more than 35 years in Canada’s armed forces for extended periods internationally on postings and operations, as well as having relocated two dozen times across Canada. During this time, he and his family have experienced and managed the challenges of spousal career disruption, moral injury and elder care among others.
Besides his military experience, Russ brings knowledge of Political Science, Business Administration and extensive Project Management training and experience to the team. He is committed to collaborative community engagement, evidence driven decisions and impact measurement.
Russ has received awards for his service, including both the American and Canadian Meritorious Service Medals and the Mirabelli-Glossop Award, for his outstanding contribution to Canada’s understanding of military and Veteran families. He was further recognized for his work with an appointment to the Order of Military Merit.
