Highlights from a study about the number of children in out-of-home care in Canada

Download summary

In this study, data on children in out-of-home care from each province and territory between 2013 and 2022 were examined.

Child welfare laws in Canada are enacted and applied by provincial and territorial government departments and local child welfare agencies. Collecting data on children and youth in the child welfare system is an important part of measuring family outcomes and population trends. It also allows the study of issues underlying social and health inequities.

This research builds on our growing understanding of the Family Wellbeing component of the Vanier Institute’s Family Diversities and Wellbeing Framework.
