Sustainable Development Goal 11:
Sustainable Cities and Communities
Canada is a highly urbanized nation, with more than eight in 10 Canadians (83%) in 2016 living in metropolitan areas and census agglomerations, and more than one in three Canadians living in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver alone.
As more families in Canada call cities home – a reality in all industrialized countries – it is increasingly important for planners and policy-makers to ensure that urban environments across the country are inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable so that families of today and tomorrow can thrive.
Sustainability is a complex issue with many components and, as such, approaches to sustainability are diverse. Safe and affordable housing, a robust and sustainable economy, and accessible green spaces are just some of the factors that can help create shared prosperity and social stability without harming the environment on which we all depend.
