Research Snapshot: Queer Households and Possibilities for Shared Housing in Canada

Highlights from a study about housing policies and 2SLGBTQI+ families

Download summary

Although progress has been made in recognizing and supporting Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex (2SLGBTQI+) families in Canada, many policies are still heteronormative and designed to support the “traditional” nuclear family. This includes housing policies, initiatives, and zoning bylaws, which ultimately limit opportunities for 2SLGBTQI+ people.

This study examines housing policies in Toronto, Ontario to assess their capacity to support 2SLGBTQI+ people and their families.

This research builds on our growing understanding of the Family Wellbeing component of the Vanier Institute’s Family Diversities and Wellbeing Framework.
