Colonel (retd) Russell Mann
Russ joined the Vanier Institute in 2016, where he currently contributes as a Special Advisor. With Russ’s more than 35 years of service in Canada’s Armed Forces, he and his family have lived most aspects of the military lifestyle, including transition as a Veteran into life in a small community on the outskirts of Ottawa.
As a result of his military career, Russ has decades of first-hand experience with the family impacts of work-related mobility, having served for years overseas on postings and operations, as well as having relocated two dozen times across Canada. During this time, he and his family have experienced and managed the challenges of post-traumatic stress, eldercare and spousal career disruption.
Russ is committed to collaboration through community engagement, and he now works with the Canadian Military and Veteran Families Leadership Circle to enhance military and Veteran lifestyle literacy to organizations, professions and committed individuals who study, serve and support military and Veteran families in Canada.
Russ has received awards for his military service, including the Meritorious Service Medal and the Mirabelli-Glossop Award for his outstanding contribution to Canada’s understanding of military and Veteran families. He was further recognized for his work with an appointment to the Order of Military Merit.
Russ and his soulmate take things one day at a time and enjoy the simple pleasures of family life.
